Results from 2008–2019 are no longer on UltraSignUp, which only hosts results for events that use its registration system. UltraSignUp sent us the files in fall 2023 to host ourselves. Thanks to BuDu Racing, LLC for posting results in nearly real time for many years.

Brief race history

Our story

The Chuckanut 50k has been around since 1993. Doug McKeever and Richard West started the race and led the charge for ten years. In 2000, RD Krissy Moehl ran the Chuckanut 50k as her first ultra.

“When Doug and Richard ‘retired’ in 2002, I decided to ensure that the Chuckanut 50k would continue. There is something about that first ultra that holds a special place in one’s heart.”

Krissy took over as race director in 2003, and Runner Girl Races, LLC dba Chuckanut 50k was founded in 2010. The 2020 edition was canceled due to COVID-19; we held a virtual version in 2021.

This event is possible thanks to co-RDs Kevin & Tyler and many amazing hours of help from committed volunteers year after year.

In memory

Dedicated to Dave Terry (1961–2009)

A note written in January 2010 by race founder Doug McKeever captures our dedication to DT:

“Chuckanut was a special race for Dave and I think he liked the present course that Richard and I designed more than we did! The technical trails, the mud, the long climbs and descents on gravel roads, and the 10 km flat out and back on the crushed rock path ALL matched Dave’s versatile running skills. I remember him writing me a thank-you note, which he concluded (after we had muttered about some course changes): ‘It’s a classic… don’t ever change it!’”

Everyone belongs on the start line

Increasing inclusivity

We want everyone to feel welcome at the Chuckanut 50k, and we keep our ears open — and keep seeking resources — for ways to include anyone who wants to run.

2019

Visually Impaired Division

Added following the guidelines of United in Stride, to let runners know we’ll do our best to involve anyone interested and prepared to run our course.

2023

Nonbinary category

A Nonbinary category that receives cash and awards equally.

2024

RIDC partnership

Through sponsor Patagonia, we partnered with RIDC to invite Running Industry Diversity Coalition athletes to our start line.

With gratitude

Special thanks

Peggy & Dennis Moehl

Aka Ma & Pa Moehl. They give so much of their time, life and energy to making each year a success.

Doug McKeever

Former RD, who marked and cleaned the course through 2024.

Steve Loitz

Through many life events, Steve swept the course on race day every year from 2003–2018.

Ellen Beecroft

Co-RD 2010–2012. Ellen’s hard work ethic made the 20th anniversary a huge success — with just the two of us we pulled off double the event size and triple the workload.

Heather Anderson

Added her flair as co-RD in 2013 & 2014, coordinating volunteers and managing local details.

Kristie Ensley

2015 & 2016 — brought friendship and a caring nature to coordinating volunteers and connecting the race with the community, filling work days and race days with laughs while getting stuff done.

Kevin Douglas & Tyler Pouley

For their energy and awesome collaboration pulling off the 25th Running Celebration in 2017, and their continued partnership since.

Thank you, Glenn Tachiyama

Glenn photographed ultras with his amazing eye and an understanding of what runners feel 12, 26 or 82 miles into an ultra. He genuinely loves being out there and sharing those moments with runners. “I am thankful that he spent the third weekend of March on the Chuckanut Mountain hillside capturing all of your faces and strides so that after the race, when most details are finished, I get one more fix of how special race directing is.” — RD Krissy

Glenn shares his photos with magazines and sells his images to runners. Previous Chuckanut 50k galleries you can still purchase from:

2022 recap by Ryan Thrower / Free Trail.

THIS is what it takes! In 2019 the course had persistent snow and ice. Volunteers rallied around Plan B to move Aid #2 and #3 — #3 meant hiking hundreds of pounds of water, cola, food and costumes about a mile uphill in the snow.
